Staff Stories: Tom Hunter-Leahy

I grew up here in Newcastle. I went to Hamilton South Public School and then around the corner to Newcastle High School, where I attained my HSC in 2002. I took a year off and worked here in Beaumont Street – at BYO Cellars, in its previous location, across from the IGA. The Bottle-O was called Corkers-on-Beaumont in those days!

Over the next few years, I studied and worked, and then graduated with bachelor’s degrees in Communications and Law. I met some great people and lifelong friends at university.

In 2015, I joined a growing local firm and worked as a full-time paralegal in personal injury law – medical negligence. I completed my graduate diploma in legal practice (College of Law, Sydney) and was admitted to practise as a solicitor.

Between 2015 and May 2020, I continued to work as a solicitor at my previous firm. I was promoted from within and eventually became an acting practice group leader in medical negligence. During the first wave of COVID-19, I parted ways with my previous firm and took some time off with my young children.

Later in 2020, I was “head-hunted” by a national mid-tier insurance law firm – but I did not stay long. When the Law Office of Conrad Curry offered me a position, I jumped at the chance to re-join a former mentor in Conrad Curry, and to work with his talented team. Since November 2020, I have relished the opportunity to expand my knowledge and skills under astute leadership.

In 2024, the firm made me a partner. My current practice spans the breadth of personal injury claims, including medical negligence, public liability, workers compensation and motor vehicle accidents. I also act in a wide range of civil litigation, intentional torts and general health law matters.

I am passionate about plaintiff personal injury law and professional negligence. It is an honour to act for a vulnerable group of Australians, who often feel left behind both financially and socially.
