Staff Stories: John Kennedy

I’ve lived in Newcastle my whole life, growing up in the suburbs of Lake Macquarie and attending local schools. In high school I always had a keen interest in health sciences and after graduating was lucky enough to be accepted into a physiotherapy degree at Newcastle University.

It wasn’t long before I realised that a career in healthcare wasn’t really for me, and my interest in government and social sciences lead me to transfer to a Law and Business degree the next year, where I chose to major in policy and political economy. I quickly felt that this was an area I wanted to pursue as a career and began to enjoy my studies a lot more! I engaged with more opportunities which lead to achieving some things I’m really proud of like earning a scholarship to travel to China to learn more about international economies and business culture.

I made my way through the first three years of Uni working at cafes, restaurants and bars where I made a lot of the friends I still have today! After a while I began to feel the need to move into a job I wanted to grow into a career, and I was fortunate enough to be offered a position as a paralegal at a firm representing insurance companies in workers compensation disputes.

I learned a lot about personal injury law there and enjoyed working with lovely people but felt I would prefer to devote my career to helping plaintiffs and injured workers. I wanted to make this move sooner rather than later and began looking for opportunities at plaintiff firms with a speciality in personal injury law. In March this year, I was offered a position as a paralegal here at The Law Office of Conrad Curry and have quickly come to love working with such a talented and delightful group of people!

Apart from China, I have also been to Japan, where I performed music while I was in high school, Aotearoa-New Zealand, where I went skydiving and road-tripped around the North Island, and Italy, where I went snowboarding and saw some beautiful and historic cities with my partner. I try to make my way to my parents’ house to see them (and their dogs!) every chance I get and plan to travel to North America for the first time as soon as I can.
